Overview

Cultural awareness is a priority for the Department. The ‘Know Ya Culture’ Programme is an island-wide multi-pronged programme consisting of events and promotions aimed to raise awareness and celebrate Anguillian culture.


National Heroes and Heroines Day celebrated on December 19th, was adopted as National Culture Day – a day that celebrates everything Anguillian.

The National Heroes and Heroines Day provides an ideal time for engaging the Anguillian public into a heightened level of celebration that truly reflects the island’s national pride, heritage and rich culture. The annual calendar of cultural events for this programme focuses on celebrating Anguilla’s art, history, community spirit and way of life.

Main Strategies

Education Component – Education is a key component of the programme. Culturally themed lessons are encouraged in the classroom. The “Know Ya Culture” quiz is an annual competition among primary schools. It is well attended and carried live for the public and aids in education and awareness of cultural heritage.

Events and Activities Component

  1. Christmas Tree Lighting and Christmas Festivities – The department collaborates with individual community groups by providing financial and technical assistance to help promote cultural awareness and community spirit. In the past, over 6 known areas have lit trees and held events to celebrate the season. These areas include The Valley, North Hill, South Hill, and West End.
  2. Awards in The Culture & Arts – An annual awards ceremony to recognise the contribution of artists and cultural practitioners. Through a feasible nomination and selection process, the department has created an award ceremony that truly reflects the level of appreciation that the Anguillian community holds for pioneers of the arts and culture.
